Steely Dan: Kid Charlemagne

“Kid Charlemagne” by Steely Dan
From the 1976 album The Royal Scam

For what it’s worth, I don’t really consider Steely Dan to be progressive rock; I consider them to be jazz rock. But since that’s a close cousin of prog, and the band was deemed worthy of an entry on ProgArchives.com, that was good enough for me.

I was inspired to feature the Dan today because I ate breakfast this morning at St. Paul’s Day by Day Cafe, which of course reminded me of one of my favorite Steely Dan songs, “Night by Night,” from 1974′s Pretzel Logic.

I couldn’t find a video of Steely Dan performing that song though, so I went with this excellent live version of another one of my favorites, “Kid Charlemagne,” from the band’s VH1 Storytellers special a few years ago.

P.S. No, that guitarist in the pre-load still frame is not Stephen Colbert.
